Veneers are a natural-looking cosmetic treatment that can provide a dramatic smile makeover.

Veneers can be applied to one or several teeth for any of the following aesthetic reasons:

  • Correct gaps between the teeth
  • Correct uneven lengths
  • Correct slightly misaligned teeth
  • Correct discoloration
  • Restore chipped teeth
  • Correct slightly crooked teeth
  • Change the size or shape

Veneers cover the front of the tooth surface and slightly wrap around the sides and biting edge of the tooth. In most cases, each tooth receiving a veneer will be carefully prepped prior to the veneer fabrication and placement. This preparation involves removing a thin (usually less than one millimeter) layer of enamel from the natural tooth in the areas that will be covered by the veneer. This allows the veneer to fit seamlessly with the contours of the natural tooth. The veneers are attached using a thin but strong bonding material. The material hardens when cured by a specialized light.

There are several types of veneers:

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are the longest-lasting and most aesthetically pleasing type of veneer. They are created in a lab to the exact specifications of the dentist and mimic the look of natural enamel, using multiple thin layers of porcelain. The size, color, shape, and fit are fully customized.

Composite Veneers

Made using composite resin, these may be made in the dental office or in a dental lab and are less expensive than porcelain veneers. They can alter the appearance of tooth color, size, or shape and can be an effective solution for less extensive cosmetic improvements. They are fully customized as are the porcelain veneers, but the composite material is somewhat susceptible to staining and does not last as long as porcelain.

Instant Veneers

Prefabricated resin veneers are not customized to the shape and fit of your teeth, although they do come in different sizes and shapes. We do not recommend instant veneers because they do not provide the appearance, quality, or durability of custom veneers.

Frequently Asked Questions about Veneers

Do veneers ruin teeth?
Veneers do not ruin teeth, but instead veneers preserve the overall integrity and health of your tooth structure because only a small amount of enamel needs to be removed in order to place them. Once the enamel is removed, you will always need to wear veneers because they replace the tooth enamel and form a protective barrier to prevent decay. The exception to this is no-prep veneers, a solution that is thinner than traditional veneers and requires little-to-no enamel removal.
Are veneers permanent?
Yes, veneers are bonded to the teeth permanently. With proper care, they can last for decades before needing replacement.
Do you have to brush veneers?
Yes, you’ll need to continue to brush and floss your teeth as usual, even with veneers. Although veneers are not susceptible to decay, they may still stain over time and brushing is important for making sure the tooth structures under the veneers remain healthy and free of cavities.
Are veneers painful?
No, veneers are not usually painful, as the work we do to apply them is performed on the outermost layers of the tooth structure. You may have some tenderness in your gums after the procedure, particularly if you have a full set of veneers, but this is minimal.
Can you get cavities with veneers?
Yes, it’s still possible for decay to form under your veneers, so it’s important to brush for two minutes twice a day and floss at least once a day. Go to the dentist every six months for an exam and dental cleaning to catch cavities in their earliest stages.
Do veneers stay white?
Yes, veneers stay white for years—they’re much more stain-resistant than bonding, for example. That said, if you’ve had your veneers for a decade or more and you regularly drink beverages that stain like coffee and red wine, you may notice that your veneers aren’t quite as bright as when you originally got them.
Do veneers look fake?
With a skilled cosmetic dentist, your veneers will look like your natural teeth—only better. We design veneers to be a shape, size, and color that looks realistic with your facial features and proportions.
Are veneers worth it?
Almost everyone who gets veneers agrees: they are worth it. They are a simple way to correct a single tooth with an imperfection or provide a complete smile makeover. Either way, the results are dramatic. You’ll leave our office with a renewed sense of confidence and a beautiful new smile.
