Frequently Asked Questions About Pediatric Dental Emergencies

What is considered a dental emergency?
We consider it a dental emergency if your child is in severe pain, if bleeding is uncontrolled, or if immediately treatment is needed in order to save a tooth.
Can I take my child to the ER for a dental emergency?
If a dental emergency is accompanied by facial trauma or other medical issues, we recommend visiting the ER; when bleeding is severe and uncontrollable, an ER visit is also necessary. Otherwise, it’s best to seek dental care from your child’s dentist. Emergency rooms don’t provide dental care, so even if they’re able to help temporarily manage your child’s pain, a dental appointment will still be necessary.
Can a knocked out tooth be put back in?
Knocked out permanent teeth can be successfully replaced with prompt treatment, but when a baby tooth is knocked out, it cannot be put back in.
